Teacher Kate
This fall marks Kate’s 8 years as Children’s Yoga Specialist in San Francisco. She has watched generations of SF's children through their entire time at pre-school go from toddling Tree Poses to Peacock Prep in Pre-K. More exciting than watching children develop the core strength, balance and coordination that will serve them in later physical activities, Kate is honored to create a space in which kids can explore their relationship to movement and their bodies that is set apart from the performing arts or competitive sports. She seeks to instill curiosity and kindness and acceptance for what it is to live and move in a body! Kate uses song, storytelling and the images of nature to invite playful shapes and stretches, awareness of breath, focus, kindness towards the self when poses are challenging and delight in movement. Time after time, she finds the most energetic children at the outset are the ones requesting (savasana) deep relaxation pose, the second they walk in the door!
As a lifelong dancer, Kate began teaching children’s creative movement classes in 1995, and continued while teaching in Japanese elementary and junior high schools in in 2000-2002. She began intensive yoga training there among the rice fields of rural Japan and began teaching children’s yoga in San Francisco in 2006. She has taught at The Hamlin School, Children’s Day school, Live Oak, Brandeis Hillel Day School, and several Marin Day Schools.
She has an active personal yoga practice and regularly trains with her mentor of 5 years, Scott Blossom (shunyatayoga.com) with whom she also interns in the clinical practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Kate completed her Master’s of Traditional Chinese Medicine and passed the California Acupuncture Licensing Exam this past August. She hopes to include pediatric medicine in her clinical practice. She also teaches Hatha and Restorative Yoga for adults in corporate settings, private homes and in studios around San Francisco.
